About this location

The first town hall which stood on the market square in Middelburg was destroyed in a major fire in 1426. Work was started on a new (and current) town hall on the other side of the market in 1452. The facade was completed in 1458. Its current appearance is the result of many centuries of work and restoration. The structure is particularly associated with the Keldermans, a family of architects, eight members of whom worked on the building. Large parts of the structure were destroyed by a German bombing raid on 17 May 1940. After a long period of restoration, the town hall is once again Middelburg’s pride and joy.
