De Manteling and Oranjezon nature reserves

Woodland, dunes, wide avenues and winding paths: De Manteling is an amazing 740-hectare nature reserve located in Oostkapelle. The Oranjezon nature reserve is also on the edge of the village. What makes Oranjezon so special? Above all, its dunescape with a mix of thickets and deciduous and coniferous woodland. Are you planning to visit this nature reserve? Admission to the terrain is just one euro.

Kasteel Westhove

Close to Oostkapelle is the 12th century castle of Westhove. In 2022, the building was voted one of the best five castles in the Netherlands! In former times it consisted of a barbican, moats, ramparts, bridges, gates and towers. Only the lower sections of some of the towers remain along with parts of the battlements. The complex has been rebuilt so often that the original castle can no longer be identified, but nevertheless it remains an impressive sight.

Museum Terra Maris

In the former orangery of Kasteel Westhove is Terra Maris, the number one museum for Zeeland’s natural history. The museum houses a fascinating exhibition which tells the story of Zeeland’s landscape and shows you the rich variety of its wildlife. The museum is for young and old alike! Behind the museum is a magnificent 2.5-hectare garden which presents the diversity of Zeeland’s landscapes in miniature.

The museum regularly organises temporary exhibitions and hosts all sorts of activities throughout the year.

Hiking and cycling trails

A stroll through the woods and dunes can be so invigorating. Struinen door bos en duin is a 9.5-kilometre hiking trail that takes you through De Manteling and past Terra Maris. Of course, you can also discover the delights of De Manteling nature reserve by bike too. There is a special 39-kilometre cycle route which wends its way through De Manteling nature reserve and the historic town of Veere.

Seasonal market

Throughout the summer, every Thursday there is a seasonal market between 10 am and 7 pm where you can browse the stalls for fresh produce and other miscellany.
