About this location

This is a motley collection of buildings which originally formed the medieval castle of Ter Hooge.  Dating from the 13th century, its first proprietor was probably Sijmon van der Hooge. Later, the castle came into the hands of the Van Borssele family. In 1713 it was sold to a merchant from Middelburg, a certain Steven Scheyderuyt. He was responsible for laying a geometrical garden in the shape of a star, a moat with scalloped edging, as well as a leafy avenue at the rear of the house.

Alterations
After having changed hands several times, the estate came into the possession of baron Van Lynden in 1871. Around 1880 the castle underwent major renovations, with living quarters, a dining room and a billiards room, with a balcony at its rear, and a veranda and a clock.

Nowadays, the complex has been divided up into a number of private apartments. For the most part, the park is open to visitors.
