In the year 1370 a church was built for the first time for Wolphaartsdijk. In 1578 a large part of the church was destroyed during the iconoclasm, both the statues and the building were damaged. The present church was built in 1861 and after the Flood Disaster of 1953 the church was restored with the help of the Disaster Fund. The restoration was completed in 1967. It is the only Neo-Byzantine (also Romanesque) church in the Netherlands.
