Tips for what to see and do in Vlissingen

Written by zeeland.com

Vlissingen is the perfect place for combining a city break and a beach holiday! You can immerse yourself in its maritime past, stroll along the prom, or treat yourself to a spot of fine dining. Vlissingen also has some excellent shopping amenities and there’s plenty going on for young and old alike. We’ve put together a list of ideas of things to do when you visit Vlissingen!

On the promenade

Vlissingen’s promenade is worth a visit any season. Try one of its delightful pavement cafes, for example, and watch the ships ply up and down the coast: they come close to the shoreline here! The promenade is also perfect place for a bracing stroll or bike ride. At the end of the prom, at Nolledijk, is the Windorgel, a wind organ, where nature determines what tunes are played.

Savour the culture

In 2018 the Maritiem Muzeeum Zeeland was voted the ‘best day out in Zeeland’. And not without reason! Here, you can discover about Vlissingen’s and Zeeland’s maritime heritage. Please note: the museum is currently being refurbished and will be reopening its doors in the summer.  Another must is the Museum Panorama Walcheren, which houses a special collection of colossal paintings. When you stand in front of the paintings, it’s as if you’re actually in the scene! In the Scheldekwartier is Museum Scheldewerf, which tells the 125-year-old story of De Schelde shipyard.

Fun activities for the kids

If you’re in Vlissingen with the kids, make a beeline for the Iguana Reptile Zoo, where all kinds of exotic creatures are on display, from large snakes to smaller reptiles. Ballorig, just outside the town centre, is an indoor adventure playground, where kids can have hours of fun clambering on the apparatus. And since 2019, Vlissingen has its own indoor trampoline park at Streetjump. The kids will love it!

Eating and drinking in Vlissingen

Vlissingen is just bursting with eateries! You might choose between a table with a sea view at one of the pavement cafes on the promenade, or sinking your feet in the sand at Pier 7 beach pavilion. There’s also the option of taking high tea at Tilly Rose. Just look out for the mint green decor. If it’s a lunch of freshly filled rolls you’re after, ’t Smoske is the place the locals head for!

Shopping in Vlissingen

Vlissingen offers a wide variety of shopping facilities. As well as the familiar chain stores, there are also local independent shops and concept stores too, such as TOF Store. You should also check out Speelwoud, a multifaceted toy store with a sustainable outlook. If you’re in Vlissingen on a Friday, it’s late-night shopping until 9 pm. Friday is also market day in Vlissingen, from 8 am to 4 pm, and can be found in Spuistraat and Lange Zelke.
