A route (51,4 km) alongside the briny Ooster- and Westerschelde waters. The two mainstays of Zeeland aquatic soil, mussels and oysters, are on the menu.
The pier at Yerseke harbour boasts a bronze statue of a so-called mussel man, to herald the local tradition. Here, mussel-laden cutters offload their ‘black golden’ goodies, on to the local mussel auction and next stop, the rest of the world. They taste best fresh – give ‘em a go!
Abandon your bike for a sec, to ponder the wondrous oyster ponds, or wells. Their wet-houses (warehouses, really), are home to many a oyster: they’re part of the magical history of Zeeuws culture.
